Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What conditions can angioplasty treat?
A: Angioplasty is most commonly performed for peripheral artery disease (PAD), intermittent claudication, critical limb ischaemia, renal artery stenosis, and to improve circulation in diabetic foot disease with non-healing ulcers.

Q: How long does angioplasty take, and will I need to stay in hospital?
A: The procedure typically takes 30 to 90 minutes. Most patients are able to walk within a few hours and return home the same day or the next day.

Q: Is angioplasty painful?
A: The catheter is inserted through a small puncture in the groin or wrist under local or general anaesthesia, so discomfort during the procedure is minimal. Mild bruising at the puncture site is common afterwards and usually settles within days.

Q: Will I need a stent as well as the balloon?
A: In many cases a stent is placed after balloon inflation to keep the artery open long-term. Whether one is needed depends on the location of the blockage and how the artery responds to the balloon.

Q: What are the risks of angioplasty?
A: Angioplasty is generally very safe. Possible risks include bleeding or bruising at the puncture site, re-narrowing of the artery (restenosis), blood clot formation, vessel injury or spasm, and allergic reaction to the contrast dye.
